The past eight years they'd been living together
and they tought that they were in love -
one day their feelings were suddenly missing
like the car keys - or one glove.

So they smiled and said "It doesn't matter."
and they kissed and said "We'll just keep trying."
but they looked at each other, bewildered
he just stood there, and she started crying.

You could wave from the window at passing ships

he said "Hey, it'f quarter past four -
let's go somewhere and have a coffee."
someone practiced the piano next door...

They went to the smallest café in town
stirred their coffee, and stared at the wall

in the evening they were still sitting around
by themselves without a sound
they couldn't believe it at all
